�Scientists in New Zealand found that while they observed systemic and airway inflammation in people with obesity and asthma, iI diseases that
are known to be strongly linked in some way, at that place was no clear evidence of an interaction 'tween the two.
The study appears in the first yield for September of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, published by the
American Thoracic Society, and was the work of tether researcher, Dr D Robin Taylor, from the University of Otago in New Zealand, and
colleagues.
Inflammation is one characteristic shared by asthma and obesity, and animal studies have suggested that fleshiness causes airways to trigger an
resistant response, only human studies have failed to establish clear evidence of either an additive or interactive link betwixt asthma and obesity via the
inflaming route.
For this controlled observational study, the researchers recruited 79 women in four groups. 20 women were obese and had asthma, 19 were of
normal weight and had asthma, 20 were corpulent and did not have asthma, and another 20, the controls, were neither asthmatic nor obese, but of
normal weight.
Taylor aforesaid he and his colleagues hypothesized that:
"The low-grade systemic inflammation present in fleshiness would augment the inflammation of bronchial asthma (a synergistic effect)."
"Or alternatively, that the inflammation of obesity might affect the airways independently (an additive effect), mayhap resulting in mixed air lane
inflammation," he added.
The patients wtih asthma stopped victimization their adrenal cortical steroid anti-inflammatory inhalers for a withdrawal geological period of quartet weeks and then all patients underwent blood
and other tests such as spirometric, lung volume, exhaled nitric acidic, induced phlegm cell counts and other biomarker tests of systemic and flight path
inflammation, such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and cytokines.
The researchers analyzed the variables known to be relevant both to obesity and bronchial asthma and looked for patterns of fundamental interaction between systemic and
airway-specific biomarkers of inflammation.
The results showed that:
Markers of systemic inflammation were higher in the weighty patients.
Markers of local kindling, the Th2 cytokines, were higher in the patients with asthma.
But no crucial interactions were identified.
Obesity "adversely affected lung function with increases in functional residual capacity and residual volume in obese but non normal-weight
patients with asthma attack, with a significant corpulency by bronchial asthma interaction".
Taylor and colleagues complete that:
"The link between fleshiness and bronchial asthma is improbable to be explained by enhancement of the "classical" forms of airway inflammation resulting from the
systemic inflammatory effects of fleshiness itself."
"Other mechanisms, possibly related to inborn immunity, may explain the relationship between obesity and asthma," they added.
Commenting on their findings, Taylor said:
"We were defeated not to find a 'smoking gun' that would explain the common association between fleshiness and asthma."
Although the results did non support the inflammation hypothesis, Taylor explained that they did provide valuable direction for future research.
"This does not change the fact that thither is a well-established link between bronchial asthma and obesity," said Taylor.
"Sometimes a negative result is important, and the results add to our body of noesis regarding the obesity-asthma link. Now we need to look in
other directions for the answers," he added.
Research on animals has raised the possibility that innate immunity changes in obesity. Taylor said they did non look at this in their study.
"Given that asthma is immunologically driven, this is a potential avenue for further research," he explained.
"Alternatively, it may be that dynamic changes in lung function that occur with episodes of asthma attack are different with excess body weight," said
Taylor.
Obese patients with asthma are harder to treat because they have an enlarged response to bronchoconstriction that makes it appear that the
asthma is worsened than it actually is.
"They may well have worse symptoms, just not as a final result of underlying airway inflammation," said Taylor.
"Still, the typical response is often to increase their inhaled anti-inflammatory therapy. This is unlikely to render the answer and may even do harm.
The answer lies in dealing with the obesity itself," he added.

'Dark Knight' in cruise control overseas

With the market slowing down as the summer comes to a close, the big movies of the engaged season ar making final rounds before getting quick for their DVD freeing. Universal's musical hit "Mamma Mia!" raised its weekend voice by $12.8 million for a cume of $234.1 gazillion, while the same studio's "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" reached an offshore gross of $220 trillion as it registered $12.5 one thousand thousand from 6,000 playdates in 50 countries.
Sony's "You Don't Mess With the Zohan," muscling its way into major abroad markets, brought in $10.4 jillion from 1,985 screens in 30 territories to raise its gross to $56.4 million, patch Disney/Pixar's "WALL-E" kept up its gait as a major contender with a weekend take of $8.5 meg from 3,193 screens in 29 markets for a porcine to engagement of $162.2 gazillion.

Signed to Virgin Norway in 2000, Lerche released the chart-topping EP You Know So Well in February 2001. A commercially successful followup EP, No One's Gonna Come, was released in June of the same year, accompanied by legion local performances and increasing industriousness praise. Lerche's distinctive interpreter and natural natural endowment for authorship likable and alternately cheery and melancholiac start tunes rapidly accomplished him as a definite rival for significance throughout Europe and beyond. Born and raised in Bergen, Norway, Lerche was weaned on the '80s crop up that emanated from his old siblings' rooms. Compelled by a shaping enchantment for bands such as a-ha, the Beach Boys, and Prefab Sprout, Lerche began formal guitar instruction at age eight-spot. Not satisfied with the lessons at school, he experimented with original tunes on his have, finally penning his low gear call, "Locust Girl," at 14. Lerche performed acoustic gigs at the ball club where his baby worked piece he was placid underage, and was "discovered" by Norwegian producer HP Gundersen. Autumn 2002 saw the release of Faces Down in America and Lerche's first gear major enlistment of the United States. He tempered fans with the live/studio appeal Don't Be Shallow EP the following year. Lerche got personal for his soph campaign, Two Way Monologue, which appeared in bound 2004. Beating Depression For Cancer Patients
�A new treatment programme for cancer patients with clinical depression can significantly boost their quality of life according to new research published in the Lancet.
Cancer Research UK scientists devised the treatment programme which offers patients one-to-one sessions with specially trained cancer nurses to help them manage their depression more effectively.
They found that, after three months of receiving the new treatment, almost 20 per cent fewer patients were depressed compared with patients who received standard NHS treatment. The difference was still evident after one year.
The study recruited 200 cancer patients with clinical depression and compared the new strategy - "Depression Care for People with Cancer" - with the standard NHS treatment.
Half were given standard care for depression either from their GP or hospital specialist. The other half received the special programme which entailed sessions on: understanding depression and the effects of antidepressants; problem-solving therapy to help patients overcome feelings of helplessness; liaison with oncologist and GP to collaborate in treatment of depression; monthly monitoring of progress by telephone and providing optional "booster" sessions.
After three months, the patients who were treated in this way found there was an improvement in anxiety and fatigue as well as depression.
Professor Michael Sharpe, from the Psychological Medicine Research group at the University of Edinburgh which carried out the study, said: "Ten per cent of cancer patients experience clinical depression and, unfortunately, it is not always adequately treated. This new treatment could substantially improve the way we manage depression in people with cancer and also in people with other serious medical conditions.
"This is the first time that this type of depression treatment has been evaluated in cancer patients and the results are very encouraging."
Cancer Research UK, which funded the study, has recently awarded Professor Sharpe's research team more than �4 million to continue their work in finding better ways to treat depression and other symptoms in cancer patients.
Dr Lesley Walker, Cancer Research UK's director of cancer information, said: "As well as finding ways to prevent and treat cancer, the charity is committed to improving the quality of life for people who are living with the disease."

Micah P Hinson Back With New Single, Label & Dates
Micah P Hinson makes a welcome return - both in live form and release-wise.
Starting on June 30th, a single 'When We Embraced' will be released from Hinson's third album, 'Micah P Hinson and the Red Empire Orchestra', which he will put out on July 14th.
Micah has also joined Tunng and White Denim to sign up with label Full Time Hobby. Producer / engineer John Congleton worked on the record after personally writing to the Texan songwriter and suggesting they collaborate.
Elsewhere, outside of music, Hinson is working on his second novel as well as a film of the first.
Back to the music (again), tour dates are coming our way soon in the next few months, including festivals.

Scarlett Johansson played her debut album, 'Anywhere I Lay My Head', to journalists at a hearing party in Fresh York yesterday.
Billboard reports that the launch took position at Joe's Gin mill in the city.
'Anywhere I Lay My Head' features 10 covers of Tomcat Waits songs and one original caterpillar tread, 'Song for Jo'; it volition be released on 20 May.
Johansson said that she had originally planned to record an album of standards only then decided to observe Waits' material.
"His melodies ar so beautiful and his voice is so distinct," she said.
Johansson said that her interpretations of the music legend's songs ingest met with his approval.
